Hypnotherapy to Help with lack of motivation: by Dublin based hypnotherapist Ailish McGrath

Motivation (lack of)

Commonly what is required to generate a feeling of motivation is either
1) enough desire or interest that the thing you want to do is so appealing to you, you are motivated to move towards and create what’s required to do it (e.g saving for a trip you would love to take)

2) enough fear or anxiety about what will happen if you don’t do it, that you are motivated into action to prevent a bad outcome (e.g a health scare can motivate dietary change)

Sometimes however you have desire and interest, but you lack the motivation. This is a frustrating situation, since you want to do a certain thing, but cannot get enough inner resolve and motivation to act.

Lack of motivation and enthusiasm can show up everywhere, at home, at work, in relationships, in pursuing goals and in everything else. This often, creates unhappiness and dissatisfaction.

Usually the reason for lack of motivation is an inner emotional conflict between what you would like to do and unresolved fear about the consequences of doing it.

Reasons for Lack of Motivation and Enthusiasm:

  • Lack of faith in your abilities.
  • Fear of failure, due to failure in the past or imagining worst case scenario outcomes.
  • Making the outcome so significant to your happiness that it has undue emotional ‘weight’.
  • Fear of being judged by family members, friends or others.
  • The habit of procrastination, self doubt or entertaining mixed messages (e.g imagining it going well (motivating) and then imagining something going wrong (de-motivating) ).
  • Doing more urgent things out of habit, guilt, blame or responsibility and not prioritizing your time for what you want to do. This leaves you with little time or energy to do what you want.
  • Being too stressed, nervous or anxious to take positive action.
  • Absence of enough incentives.
  • Not breaking down the tasks into manageable steps so the goal seems overwhelming.
  • Deep down feeling undeserving of success, unworthy of the goal, powerless to affect change, fearful of being different.
  • We can become familiarized with playing a particular role in life or having a particular fear for so long that going beyond it doesn’t feel like ‘me’ so we postpone taking action.

These reasons / inner conflicts stifle motivation and enthusiasm.

    Natural Motivation

Anything you truly want to do, that is aligned with your heart’s desire, that you have or can develop the skills to achieve is achievable once you:

  • 1) Resolve the inner conflict, fear, doubt, worry, guilt and anxiety
  • 2) Decide and make a firm commitment to your goal
  • 3) Entertain thoughts of achieving and visualize the outcome in a bright, colorful and happy way
  • 4) Take appropriate inspired action

In this way you will be naturally motivated to move forward and achieve what you put your mind to.
